William "Sherman" Mercer

January 16, 1928 — April 12, 2024

Marion, VA

Marion, Va. Early Friday morning, April 12, 2024, the Lord preciously took William Sherman Mercer’s hand as he was surrounded by family. Sherman is now in heaven after 96 years of sharing his kindness, inspiration, generosity, and Christian faith to family, friends, and anyone he met. His family loved him dearly and know he is enjoying being with his wife, Penny, who went to be with the Lord last year. Sherman was a loving husband, father, and grandfather “Pa” who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He attended Marion First Church of God and Grace United Methodist. Sherman worked at Brunswick Corporation and retired as a Data Processing Manager after 45 years of service. His gentle and loving Christian spirit will forever be remembered.

He was preceded in death by his faithful and loving wife of 73 years, Mary Frances “Penny” Mercer; parents; William “Bill” and Pearl Williams Mercer.

Sherman is survived by his daughters, Debbie Peake and husband David of Marion, VA and Janice Moore and husband Darrell of Kingsport, TN; six grandchildren, Angela Reynolds (JR), Laura Hernandez (Lazaro), David Peake II (Meghan and Laila Sigmon), Chris Moore (Megan), Matthew Moore and Mark Moore; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Reynolds, Katilyn Reynolds, Hailey Reynolds and Oakleigh (Pa’s “babydoll”) Moore; very special cousin who was like a sister, Janet Atkins Stevenson; special friends, Bill and Edith Reynolds; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 15, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Fraziers’ Seaver-Brown Chapel. A service to celebrate his life will follow at 11:30 a.m. with Reverend Herman Cress officiating. Entombment will follow at Rose Lawn Mausoleum.

The family wishes to thank everyone for all the prayers, calls, support, and care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
