Shirley Grinstead Mercer age 88, passed away Friday, January 24, 2025 at her home. 

Shirley was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was a devout Christian and a faithful lifetime member of Falling Water Baptist Church who held the honor of being the oldest member. Shirley worked in the dietary department of Francis Marion Manor retiring as Dietary Manager. When she wasn’t busy with church, family or work, Shirley enjoyed being in her own kitchen cooking and baking. She had her life’s priorities straight – God, family and community. Shirley’s unwavering faith and love will be missed. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Doris “Pooch” Mercer; daughter, Pamela Mercer Spencer; parents, Ted and Hassie Grinstead; sister, Bonnie Hagy. 

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Angela Horton (Rich); son, Teddy Mercer all of Marion, Va.; brother, William Dale Grinstead of Chilhowie, Va.; four grandchildren, Christopher Spencer, Timothy Spencer, Bobby Mercer & Kayla Atkins; five great-grandchildren, Madison Spencer, Carson Spencer, Kolbie Spencer, Dylan Mercer and Caleb Mercer; several nieces, nephews and their families.  

The family will receive friends Monday, January 27, 2025 from 5 until 7 p.m. at Falling Water Baptist Church, 2206 Highway 16, Marion Va. Funeral services will begin at 7 p.m. with Pastor Michael Hopkins and Pastor Jerry Creasy officiating. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery, 4410 Lee Highway, Marion Va. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m.
