 Robert F. “Bob” Coulthard age 96, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehab, Rural Retreat, Va.


Robert grew up in Chatham Hill, Va. He graduated from Rich Valley High School in 1945. Robert received his Bachelor's degree from Emory and Henry College, Emory, Va. in 1950. In 1954, he obtained a Master's in education degree from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va. For 41 years, Bob educated children in Virginia and his gift of coaching and teaching made an immeasurable impact on many lives. At various times throughout his work in school systems, he taught Math and coached basketball, baseball, football, golf, and tennis in Sugar Grove, Chilhowie, Marion, and Virginia Beach. Bob believed in giving back to his community, evidenced by his involvement in the Lions Club, Little League, Rye Valley Ruritan Club, Young at Heart, and the Farmers Club. Bob enjoyed attending sporting events, square dancing, and working in his vegetable garden. He was a member of Wharf Hill Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and church treasurer. From his time in the U.S. Army to his numerous years in education, Bob Coulthard was a man of service, and he will be missed by many.


Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Arthur and Fannie Belle Coulthard. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Marilou Compton, Alvie Coulthard, Theo Coulthard, Bill Coulthard, Holmes Coulthard, and June Overbay.

Bob is survived by the love of his life and wife of 66 years, Evelyn Page Richardson Coulthard. He is also survived by his daughter, Sharon Coulthard Penley (Mitchell); son, Robert F. Coulthard, Jr.; four grandchildren, Erin Grace Penley Johnson (Daniel), Seth Mitchell Penley, Evelyn Stewart McAnally (Matt), Robert Adams Coles (Kate); three great-grandchildren, Ella, Catherine, and Sarah McAnally; and several nieces, nephews, and their families.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, therapy department, staff, and friends at Mountain Laurel Rehabilitation and Nursing for their excellent care during Bob's residency. The family would also like to thank the staff of Fraziers' Seaver-Brown Funeral Home for their compassionate assistance with the final arrangement services. 

A Celebration of Life with Military Rites will be held at Wharf Hill Methodist Church in Sugar Grove, on September 28, 2024, at 2 p.m., for all family and friends. Pastor Mike Dixon officiated the private family service and burial on March 24, 2024 in Ridge Lawn Cemetery, 5522 Sugar Grove Highway, Sugar Grove, Va.
