Obituary

Phillip Clay Hopkins, DVM, age 74, passed away surrounded by his family, Saturday, July 11, 2026 at Maple Grove Nursing and Rehab in Lebanon, Virginia.

Phil was a good husband, a great dad and a fun Papaw. He was a devoted and caring veterinarian and a friend to many. Doc practiced veterinary medicine for right at 45 years. He loved helping animals and making a difference in the lives of every community he found himself in. He served as Chairman of the Smyth County School Board for many years. He was a deacon in the Marion Baptist Church and a faithful member of Laurel Springs United Methodist Church. He loved to fish and never turned down an opportunity to cast a line just about anywhere. Although Phil was not a large man, he contributed big to this old world and his presence will be missed by many but his legacy will live for years to come.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, William Keith & Bertha Mae Blevins Hopkins and his brother, Alex Hopkins.

Phillip is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Hinton Hopkins, Marion, Virginia; daughter, Courtney Woody & Chris of Richmond, Virginia; step-daughter, Meagen Stitt & James of Wytheville, Virginia; sons, Chase Hopkins & Stephanie, Marion, Virginia, step-son, Andrew Hafer, Marion, Virginia; 5 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren.

At his request, there will be no service. Phil requested his body be donated to science.
