Patricia "Pat" Womack Atkins

January 13, 1943 — November 5, 2025

Marion, Virginia

Marion, Virginia

Patricia “Pat” Louise Womack Atkins age 82, took her last breath Wednesday, November 5, 2025; and her heart, which was the biggest most selfless and most caring, stopped beating.

Pat was born January 13, 1943 in Halifax County, Virginia where she resided and received her RN degree. When she was born, she was without a name for a few months because her parent’s wanted the doctor to name her. During that time her family affectionately called her Betty Owen – and that was what she was always known as to them. In 1970 while filling in at a diner for a friend, she met the man she would soon marry and spend her life with, and moved to and between Marion, Virginia and Columbia , South Carolina. Pat (mama) grew up on a farm and her love for animals and taking care of anything and everything was second nature to her. She had anything as a pet in her life and never thought you could have too many. That caring continued for her love of mankind, hence why she went into nursing and received her Registered Nursing license. She spent much of her career in mental institutions and prison infirmaries, which she very much loved and enjoyed. After giving birth to her daughter, she became a stay at home mother to her and to be there at all of her extra-curricular activity events and functions. During those years she became everyone’s mama and to this day is affectionately known as “Mama Pat.” Later she worked at Appletree Restaurant in Marion and made numerous friends and enjoyed talking to all the customers. When Appletree closed, she worked at District III feeding the seniors where her list of friends continued to grow. When that job ended, she worked for Public Partnership taking care of those who couldn’t take care of themselves. She was happiest when taking care of others and helping others to a fault. She was truly one to give you the shirt off her back and the last penny to her name. She never once complained and you never knew when something bothered her and she always persevered. Pat cared for so many while dealing with multiple back surgeries, fighting breast cancer 4 times, skin cancer and cervical cancer. Near the end of her life, she had heart trouble – and her main concern was that her pacemaker be donated to a dog that could use it and that her “baby” Maria was taken care of. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with her furry feline Percy, and her furry grandchildren, as well as feeding all the birds, squirrels and other wildlife.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 40 years Reber Joseph “Joe” Atkins (until his passing in 2008 and she never dated again); grandson, Oliver Ian; parents, Charlie and Mary Womack; brothers, Bud Womack, Lynn Cephus Womack, Mack Womack and Willie Womack; sister, Nellie May Spencer; several nieces and nephews; two grand-dogs, Blue and Capri.

Pat is survived by her “baby” , Reba Maria Atkins and husband, Jamie Finley (who she treated like her own and who thought of her as his mother) of Marion, Va.; granddaughters, Trista Bowen and Erin Bryant of Williamston, SC, Kattie and Avery Eskew of Pelzer, SC; great-grandchildren, Mikah Paul, Kamden Michael, Jackson Avery (Jack Jack), and Maddox Rachel (Maddie Rae or MR); adopted daughters and their significant others, Kaci Tuell and Logan Sweet (Dylan and Caleb) of Chilhowie, Va., Jodie and Jared Blevins, (Braxton and Layla), Carla Hylton Hall and Chad Barr, all of Marion, Va.; special daughter-in-law, Karen Boggs Bowen of Williamston, SC; best friends, Colleen Mullinax of Columbia SC, Betty Ramey of Marion, Va.; fur companion Percy Layne; fur grandkids, Jingles and Maggie May; son Richard Bowen; daughter, Wendy Dearmin, both whereabouts unknown; step-children, Joey Atkins of Chilhowie, Va. and Pam Davis of Marion, Va.
