MARION, VIRGINIA: MARY GLENN BARTON BURTON, age 64, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 in Asbury Place at Wytheville, Wytheville, Virginia, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Smyth County, Virginia on May 28, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Robert Don and Mary Margaret Tibbs Barton. She was a 1955 graduate of Sugar Grove High School, a 1957 graduate of Marion College and 1960 graduate of Radford University with a B.S. Degree in Education. Mrs. Burton retired after 30 years of teaching in the Fairfax, Roanoke and Smyth County School Systems having taught at Marion Primary School from 1972 till her retirement in 1996. For many years, she was an active member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Outstanding Teachers, Chi Chapter of Bland, Smyth and Wythe Counties. Mary was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion, the Deborah Circle, and the United Methodist Women. After retiring, she was able to enjoy her favorite hobbies of reading, gardening and playing golf. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Robert D. and Geneva Barton, and a brother-in-law, Robert L. Hoffman. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Patrick Glenn and Denise Burton of Wytheville, Virginia. One sister, Donna Barton Hoffman of Marion, Virginia. One brother and sister-in-law, John W. and Joanne Barton of Sugar Grove, Virginia. Four nephews, Lance and Donald Hoffman, Greg and Robert Barton. One niece, Ann Barton Hester. Three great-nieces and two great-nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 17, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Buddy Miller, and the Rev. James Pollock officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgelawn Cemetery in Sugar Grove, Virginia with the Rev. Harry Howe officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel or anytime at the home of Mrs. Robert Hoffman, 177 Robin Hood Drive, Marion, Virginia 24354. Those who wish may make memorials to the Scholarship Fund of the First United Methodist Church, 115 South Church Street, Marion, Virginia 24354 or to the charity of your choice. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the host of family and friends for their support during her illness. We are grateful for all the care givers, especially Ann Sisson, who served with loving kindness.
