Joanne Griffith Styron

MARION, Va.

Joanne Griffith Styron age 89, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Joanne was born in 1934 in Bluefield, West Virginia. After graduating from Bluefield High School, Joanne continued her education in nursing in Abingdon at Johnston Memorial Hospital, becoming a Registered Nurse. She then moved to Baltimore, Maryland working at Johns Hopkins Hospital where she studied psychiatry. Joanne then met the love of her life and in 1959 she and John were married, moving to Marion, Virginia in the early 1960’s where they remained for 59 years. She loved animals and would feed any creature that ventured onto their property. Joanne loved classical music, going to live music events, and singing in her church choir. She especially loved traveling to the beach to visit her two favorite locations of Cape Lookout and Emerald Isle, North Carolina.  Her family and the creatures of this world will truly miss her.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John B. “JB” Styron.

Joanne is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Bird of Bluefield, W.Va.; sons, John B. Styron, II and wife, Julia Dearborn of Oxford, N.C., and Michael T. Styron and husband, Diarmuid Corcoran of Emerald Isle, N.C.; grandchildren, Leslie Styron of Marion, Va., Hailey Bird of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Corey Bird of Topsail Island, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Joanne’s family will receive friends Thursday, February 22, 2024 from 5 until 7 p.m. at Fraziers’ Seaver-Brown Chapel. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 23, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Fraziers’ Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor Natalie Justice and Pastor Harry Howe officiating. Graveside services will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery, 4335 Lee Highway, Marion, Va. 24354.
