James Edward Bridges

ATKINS, Va.

James Edward Bridges, age 88, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2022 at his home.

Ed had it all together, he loved the Lord, his family, and his country. Ed was a long-time member of Cedar Bluff Baptist Church in Atkins, proud Army Veteran of the Korean War, and a loving husband, dad, and papaw. He drove a truck for 26 years, and owned his own trucking company for 12 years. Ed was active in his community, he and Reba were caretakers of Wassum Cemetery for over 30 year; and Ed was a founding member and chief for several years, of the Atkins Volunteer Fire Department. Ed was the welcoming and waving hand from the porch in Atkins – his smile and friendly wave will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucian and Ruth Bridges.

Ed is survived by his wife of 69 years, Reba Catron Bridges of Atkins, Va.; sons, Darrell Bridges and wife, Patty of Atkins, Va. and Mike Bridges and special friend, Bev Wymer of Marion, Va.; three grandchildren, Andrew Bridges, Logan Bridges and Hannah Bridges, all of Atkins, Va.

My thoughts and prayers are with each of you. I first met Ed at Waddell Transfer when I went to work there. He was so kind and easy to talk to. Years later, I loved running into him… the same Ed as always. Your family was blessed to have him. I wish I had seen this earlier as I would have come to his visitation. He was a really good, kind gentleman.

Reba, Mike, and Darrell, I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Edward's passing. I didn;t see his obituary until it was too late. please forgive me for not being at his funeral. He was a great guy, and always made me feel welcome when I came down to visit Mike and Darrell as kids. He was a great father and husband too, and I know you're all hurting right now. God bless you all, and I'll be keeping you in my prayers.
