James Alden “Jim” Nunley Sr., age 73 passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn.

Jim was a special soul; a dearly loved husband, a dad to everyone, and a friend to many. Wherever Jim went, he would put a smile on someone’s face and make a new friend. He first attended the Horsepen Church of Christ, then later Crossroads Church of Christ (Wytheville, Va.) where he served the Lord with his wife, Patty for many years. Both of his church families were very special and precious to Jim, or as his family lovingly called him “Jim-Bob.” He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing, and if he was listening to music, you can bet it would be gospel, bluegrass or a little CCR. Being a papaw changed his world, and they became his world. Jim left a legacy of kindness and love behind, and he is missed.

He was preceded in death by his son, James A. “Jamie” Nunley, Jr.; grandson, Coy Nunley; parents, Alden Doke Nunley and Ella Graham Nunley; brother, Claude Allen Nunley; sisters, Agnes Greer, Marie Thompson and Betty Maines.

Jim is survived by his wife, Patricia "Patty" Smith Nunley of Marion, Va.; son, Zac Nunley (Samantha) of Rich Valley, Va.; daughters-in-law, Melissa Creasy and Amanda Carver; sister, Wilma Lee Hall of Marion, Va.; seven grandchildren, Sara Kate Nunley and Sydnee Kae Nunley of Bluefield, Va., August and Skyler of Marion, Va., Zac Nunley, Jr., Waylon Nunley and Jessa Nunley of Rich Valley, Va.; many nieces and nephews; special nephew, Phillip Maines; dog and “little buddy”, Winston.

Special thank you to the staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital, and Holston Valley Medical Center for their care.
