Douglas Wayne Combs Sr., age 66 passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at his home.
Doug was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of Elizabeth Methodist Church, and a faithful community servant always helping others in need. Doug was a hard worker, providing for his family. He mowed yards for over 35 years, worked for the Smyth County School System for 42 years, and drove a truck for Kegley Trucking for over 20 years. When Doug wasn’t working, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved trains and often took his boys to steam engine shows. Doug also enjoyed fishing, farming, watching dirt track racing, making apple butter and molasses, growing vegetables, taking care of the animals on the farm and riding his Harley through the country.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman Gayle Combs & Ora May Combs.
Doug is survived by his wife of 44 years, Debbie Burkett Combs; sons, Douglas Wayne Combs, Jr. (Shannon) & Daniel T. Combs (Tony Pierson); sisters, Diane Chambers (Dallas) & Elizabeth Aker (Mike); brothers, Sherman Combs, Jr. (Gayla) & Gwyn Combs (Sue); grandchildren, Danny (Ashley) & Henry (Kaitlyn); great-grandchildren, Joziah, Khloe, Waylon, Lexie, Madalyn & Annabell; several nieces, nephews, cousins & their families.
The family would like to offer a special thank you for all the support and love that was given from Doug’s family, Gwyn (Sue), SG (Gayla), Diane (Dallas), Liz (Mike), and special friends. Also, a special thank you to Wythe Home Circle (Sandy, Jennifer, James, Hanna, and Brittany). Wythe Palliative Care (Tammy), and Wythe Hospice (Vicky, Mary, Danelle, Belinda, and Heather).
Family will receive friends Saturday, August 2, 2025 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Elizabeth Methodist Church, 547 Virginia Highlander Road, Sugar Grove, VA. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor Mike Dixon & Pastor John Roe officiating. Burial will follow in Pugh Cemetery, 1463 Teas Road, Sugar Grove, VA.
Pallbearers will be Douglas, Daniel, Tony, Danny, Henry, Eric, Andrew, Matthew, Jacob; Honorary Pallbearer, Joziah.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to Elizabeth Methodist Church or Sugar Grove Fire Department.
