No Sugar Grove, Virginia
Charles “Leon” Anderson, age 72, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026, at Carrington Place of Wytheville, after a long courageous battle with cancer and health declines.
Born July 11, 1953, Leon was the son of Fred Cleveland and Mary Charman Vaught Anderson. Leon was a lifelong resident of the Sugar Grove Community and lifelong member of Wharf Hill Methodist Church and groundskeeper for the church and Ridgelawn Cemetery for many years.
Leon was a very Godly, intelligent, caring and emotional man who genuinely loved those who loved and accepted him.
Leon had a passion for helping others without recognition and supporting the Sugar Grove community. In his younger years he was a member of the Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department, serving thirty years and holding the role as Lieutenant. Leon was also a member of the Sugar Grove Boy Scouts of America Troop 0094.
Leon was also passionate about supporting St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Guiding Eyes, Toys for Tots, American Legion VFW and the Smithsonian Institution. Leon donated generously before caring for himself for many years because it brought joy to his heart.
Leon was very proud and knowledgeable of his Native American heritage and an avid supporter of the National Museum of the American Indian, Northern Plains Reservation, the Southwest Reservation Aid and the Saint Joseph’s Indian School.
Leon thoroughly enjoyed sharing memories of the Sugar Grove community with anyone who would listen. The SGVFD, The Sugar Grove Diner, the many service station stories, the Choate farm, The Farmhouse Market and more. His memories and His smile were contagious and for those who befriended Leon, he was such a blessing and someone we can all learn that kindness matters.
Leon spent the last few years under hospice care, at The Carrington Place of Wytheville. He thrived, was surrounded and accepted by many later in life friends and his buddy Joe Blevins. He enjoyed playing BINGO, building beautiful puzzles, working word searches and Leon’s pride and joy was his beautiful coloring artwork.
In addition to his parents, Leon was preceded in death by his grandparents Oscar and Minnie Alice Vaught of the Grant, VA community, sister Mary Anderson, and family friends, Jesse and Carol Choate of Sugar Grove.
Leon is survived by his special Waller family of Sugar Grove, Jacob, Kristy, Owen, Jersey and Rowan. Watching the Waller children grow was the highlight of many of Leon’s days and conversations. Leon is survived by special friends Carl Keyes, Gwyn and Sue Combs and SG Combs of Sugar Grove, and many friends of Wharf Hill Methodist and Elizabeth Methodist churches.
Leon is also survived by special cousins Suzanne Vaught Meyers, husband Dennis of Tennessee, Charles “Chuck” Wright, wife Tara of Katy, Texas, Ricky Wright of Tennessee.
Long live Leon’s legacy and love of Gospel hymns, western movies, the American flag, meatloaf, breakfast burritos, biscuits and gravy, Cracker Barrel lunch dates, Bojangles hash browns and loving like Jesus.
