Charles Dalton Riley Campbell, 23, of Troutdale, VA, passed away on February 24, 2024, at Wythe County Community Hospital.
Dalton was born on February 15, 2001, to Cassie Lynn Campbell in Grayson County, VA. Dalton grew up in Grayson County close to his large extended family including his grandparents and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Dalton had a strong bond and close relationship with both of his older siblings, Alex “Al” Campbell and India Cornett. When he was in his early teens, Dalton came to live with his sister India and her husband, Michael Cornett, of Troutdale where he spent the formative years of his adolescence. Dalton was a great kid, and he was raised to be kind, loving, and considerate of others. After graduating from Grayson County High School in 2019, he went on to study at Wytheville Community College. Dalton was employed at Smyth County Machine and Welding where he excelled as a skilled machinist and took great pride in his work.
Soon after graduating high school, Dalton met Hannah Dietrich and the two began dating. The relationship blossomed and on January 26, 2021, their son Casey was born. Dalton was a devoted father, and he took an active role in caring for the baby and teaching his son new skills. He loved watching his son grow and begin to explore all the wonderment of life.
Dalton’s passions included music and fishing. At a young age, he picked up the guitar and was quickly hooked on picking and singing. He also later learned to play the banjo. Dalton enjoyed entertaining his family and friends and playing for others who enjoyed bluegrass. In his free time, Dalton could often be found at the river or one of his favorite fishing holes. One of his hobbies included tying his own fishing flies.
Due to his openness and positive energy, Dalton never met a stranger. He had a love of people, and he could strike up a conversation with pretty much anyone who crossed his path. With his sharp wit, sense of humor, and a tendency to never take himself too seriously, Dalton was sure to bring a smile to the face of those around him. He had several close friends growing up and those friendships carried through into his adult life. Dalton was a fierce friend and would go out of his way to provide help to anyone who needed it. Always the life of party, he would regale those around him with elaborate stories of his life and adventures, and Dalton never missed an opportunity to highlight his own handsomeness and charm. Everyone who knew Dalton, felt the warmth of his genuineness, his big heart, and his protective, nurturing soul. Words cannot convey how deeply Dalton is missed by those whose lives he touched.
