Bobby Gene Varney, age 85, died Tuesday, September 30, peacefully, at his home surrounded by his close family.

He was a member of the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atkins, Va. Mr. Varney was a dedicated owner-operator of 18-wheelers, or “big rigs,” and proudly drove over one million miles during his career.

Mr. Varney is survived by three daughters, one son, one daughter in law and five grandchildren: Nicole Hanley of Las Vegas, Nev., and her son Sean Hanley of Livermore, Calif.; Bridget Varney, of Norfolk, Va., Karen Gil, and her two daughters, Bella and Sophie of Blacksburg, Va., Brent and Jeanie Varney, and their two daughters Chloe and Charleigh, of Galax, Va.; two sisters and one brother-in law: Joann Pruitt of Marion, Va., Phyllis Fern and Gordon Burkett of Atkins, Va.; three brothers and three sisters-in-law: Hairel and Maryelou Varney of Ferndale, Mich., Ronald and Mary Varney of Wytheville, Va., and Freddie and Linda Varney of Marion, Va.; several nieces and nephews and their families.

The family extends special thanks to the caring staff members: Heather, Andrea and Helen at the Cancer Center at Smyth County Community Hospital. The family also wants to thank Chloe Gobble and the rest of the kind staff at MSA Hospice. Lastly, we want to thank Aunt Fern for all her loving care throughout the years.

The family will receive friends Saturday, October 4, 2025 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Fraziers’ Seaver-Brown Chapel, 237 East Main Street, Marion Va. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor Mike Sage officiating. Burial will follow at Wassum Cemetery 5549-5557 Lee Highway, Atkins Va. with Military Rites conducted by the U.S. Army Funeral Honors Guard and Francis Marion VFW Post #4667.
