Marion, Virginia
With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of a devoted husband, loving father, and faithful servant of God; Bobby Gene Borders age 82, passed away Wednesday, December 24, 2025 at his home.
Bobby proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, including service during the Vietnam War. During his military service, Bobby trained and handled dogs – an experience that shaped a lifelong bond with animals and led to a home filled with devoted companions throughout his life. His most recent dog Max, was his “constant shadow and loyal friend.” Following his military service, he worked for more than 20 years at Brunswick, where he later retired. Even in retirement, his heart for service and community never slowed – he spent many years giving back as a substitute teacher, impacting countless students with his steady presence, kindness and wisdom. For over 40 years Bobby was a faithful member of Marion Baptist Church where his devotion to God and church family remained constant. His faith was not only something he professed, but something he lived daily through service, humility and love. Bobby dedicated many years to the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, often serving in leadership roles. He took great pride in mentoring young people, teaching responsibility, character and the importance of doing the right thing – even when no one was watching. At home Bobby found joy and peace in simple, meaningful pursuits. He lovingly cared for his many plants – especially his cherished African violets; and enjoyed cross-stitching, including the remarkable accomplishment of completing an entire Monopoly board by hand. These hobbies reflected his patience, creativity, and attention to detail. Above all, Bobby was an amazing husband and father who loved without hesitation and gave without expectation. He leaves behind more than memories – he leaves lessons, laughter, and a legacy of love that will continue to guide and comfort us for years to come.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Fannie Borders; brothers, Charles W., Earl W., John D., Fred R., and James Borders; sister, Ruth M. Poston.
Bobby is survived by his wife of 48 years, Debra Borders of Marion, Va.; sons, John Borders of Marion, Va. and Josh Borders of Johnson City, Tenn.; sisters, Shirley Smith, Patsy Haynes, Betty Kestner, all of Saltville, Va.; brothers, Ralph “Dee” Borders of Saltville, Va. and Jack Borders of Cleveland, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews and their families.
