Ruth Duncan Albert

Marion, Va.

Ruth Duncan Albert left this world for her heavenly home on May 4 , 2019.

She was born on November 12, 1927 to the late Amanda and Carl Duncan in Washington County, Virginia. Ruth did not shy away from hard work. She worked hard on her family farm growing tobacco in order to attend business college. After completing her education and while working, she met her loving husband, Robert (Bob) Albert in Bluefield, West Virginia. She and Bob married and moved to Marion, Virginia where they raised their two children. Ruth worked in the treasurer's office of Smyth County for over 40 years with half of those as the Treasurer. She loved her job and especially the contact she had with the people every day. Also, her home church, Marion Baptist, held a special place in her heart. Ruth's greatest love was her family and especially being "Nanny" to her grandchildren. After retirement, Ruth enjoyed traveling and could claim that she visited all 50 states.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Clayton Albert; four grandchildren, Robby Albert, and Jacob, Joshua and Justin Hicks; siblings, Lela Owens, Doris Tolliver, Opal Davis, Helen Barlow, Clayborn and Denton Duncan.

Ruth is survived by her two children, Robert Steven Albert and wife, Irene, and Sharon Albert Hicks and her husband, Jack; four grandchildren, Zachary Albert, Allie Cook, Hannah Hicks, Luke Hicks; great-grandchild Mieloh Cook; and two brothers, Claude and Johnny Duncan.

The family would like to thank Hospice and the special caregivers at Carriagehouse Assisted Living in Greensboro, NC, where she spent the last three years of her life.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Marion Baptist Church, 1258 N. Main Street, Marion, Va. 24354. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery, 4410 Lee Highway, Marion, Va. 24354. The family will receive friends Friday, May 10, 2019 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory and honor of her grandsons, Robby and Zachary Albert, can be made to Great Lakes Hemophilia Foundation, 638 North 18th Street, Suite 108, Milwaukee, WI 53233 or online at GLHF.org.

Sharon and Steve - Your mother was a wonderful person who was kind to everyone and served her community well. Her greatest asset was the great job she did in raising her children. My sympathy goes on to you during your time of loss.

I will miss Ruth and her beautiful smile at the Carriage House, Greensboro, NC. My mother, Allene, is a resident at this assisted living facility, and she always mentioned the bright colors Ruth wore, thinking they were as cheerful as Ruth herself. It has also been a pleasure meeting Sharon Albert Hicks and her daughter Hannah. Ruth was so proud of all of her grandchildren and especially pleased when Hannah played her harp for the residents. All the residents attending were enthralled and enjoyed the music selections made by Hannah. I hope all of your wonderful memories of Ruth will bring you comfort at this time. Fondly, Jan S.

Sharon and Steve, I am so sorry for the loss of your Mom. Such a special person. I had the privilaage of being her neighbor and also working for her at the Treasurer Office. Best Boss Ever! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.

Sharon, Robert and families, I am so sorry for your loss. I have so many fond memories of Ruth while I was growing up in Marion Baptist Church where she and my mom were both Lottie Moon Circle members. Ruth was a precious, sweet lady whom I've missed since she moved from Marion. My prayers for God's comfort and strength are with each of you. Margie Powell Akers
