Ronnie Byrd

Ronnie "Papa" Byrd, age 80, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at Carrington Place of Rural Retreat.

He was born December 15, 1937 in West Virginia to the late Lee and Opal Byrd. Ronnie Byrd was a constant at Grissom Motor Parts for more than 53 years. Everyone knew Ronnie "Papa" Byrd. He was a devoted Christian, loving husband, father and "Papa". He loved serving his church, East End Baptist, as a Deacon, Vacation Bible School worker, Sunday School superintendent, as well as organizing Children's Church. He was a true "Papa" – always loving children, he also served as a Boy Scout Leader. There are not enough words to describe the good that was and always will be Ronnie Byrd. His passing will leave a big space in the hearts and lives of his family and many friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Wendell and Glenn; and sisters, Evelyn, Mary, Brenda and Linda.

Ronnie is survived by his wife, Molly Lucille Byrd of Marion, Va.; daughter, Terry Murphy and husband, Billy of Dublin, Va.; sons, Matt Byrd of Abingdon, Va., Jason Byrd and wife, Belinda of Marion, Va.; daughter-in-law, Tracie Byrd of Wytheville, Va.; two grandchildren, Alicia Hammack and Brianna Wyatt; great-grandson, Talan Hammack; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Courtney DeBord and Julie Baldwin.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Brother Larry Byrd, the Reverend Darrell Lambert and the Reverend Paul Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood Mausoleum, Rural Retreat, Va. The family will receive friends Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Dear Lucille, Terry and Jason - We are so very sorry to hear of Ronnie's passing. What a very special man he was here on earth. He was Gretchen's favorite ! We will never forget the years of being neighbors and both of you being so kind to our family. We know Ronnie will be sorely missed but we will see him again on that reunion day and we look forward to that. Ronnie made our lives brighter just by being in it and we send our love and condolences to all of you. Much love, Eddie, Kim, Gretchen, Marshall & Tyler Doss

Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Love, The Owens Family

My heart goes with the family and friends. Ronnie was a good person and always watched over us kids in the neighbor hood when we was out riding our bikes or just playing to make sure we was okay. He will be missed dearly. Prayers and thoughts with all but sure he is Heaven and watching and protecting all.

We are so saddened to hear of Ronnie's passing. Be assured of our prayers for the entire family. Our memories are precious from our childhood and teen years at East End. Ronnie and Glenn were great RA leaders and Christian examples for our RA group to look up to and learn from. Ronnie was always one who "lived out" his faith through many avenues. His influence lives on!

Dear Lucille and family, We were so very sorry to hear of the loss of Ronnie....our hearts are broken along with yours. We thank God that our paths crossed at East End Baptist Church so many years ago and that we have shared such sweet friendship with you and your family throughout the years. May God give you the comfort that only He can. You will be in our thoughts and prayers....
