Roger Barry Shields

MARION, Va.

Roger Barry Shields, age 56, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2018.

He was the owner of Marion Electric Company since 1991. He and his late father started Marion Electric Company in 1969 in the old John Deere building. Roger was a 1983 graduate of Virginia Tech, with a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He loved to share his extreme knowledge of firearms with friends or strangers. Roger was an avid outdoorsman and loved his beagles. One of his greatest joys for over 29 years was handing out candy every Sunday at Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member. His favorite thing was to sponsor the Stick Horse Event at the Rich Valley Fair for the last 26 years; giving every child a $2 bill to go buy ice cream. Roger coached recreational sports for many years and loved to tease the referees every chance he got; they loved his sense of humor. But first and foremost, his love for family and God were the most important things in Roger’s life. Especially his two sons, whom he always made sure they were taken care of. He always taught them to have good character, and never lose your morals; to believe if someone started something they had finish it and to try and have a good sense of humor.

Roger is survived by his wife of almost 34 years, Juanita Shields; two sons, Ryan Shields and wife, Ginny Moorer-Shields, all of Marion, Va. and Hunter Shields and girlfriend, Leslie Dominguez of Chicago, Ill.; very special little buddy, Keegan Henson that he loved dearly; special niece, Christie Croye and husband, Kyle of Bluefield, W.Va.; very special great-niece Kylie Croye; two special great-nephews, Joey Croye and Chase Lowe; an amazing Aunt Clara “Butchie” Severt all of Bluefield, W. Va.; mother-in-law, Goldie Harris of Ceres, Va.; several other nephews, special cousins, a sister, family and many friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at 7 p.m. at Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Reverend Mike Sage officiating. Family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Guestbook

To Rogers Family, Please accept my deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers. I was saddened to hear of Rogers passing. Roger and I and a group of guys hung out together almost constantly throughout our Jr High & Sr High School years but we all scattered right after graduation. So I havent seen Roger since 1979. But I still remember his sharp wit, extraordinary intelligence and wonderfully warm humor just like it was yesterday. Last week, I had my yearbook out and was already reminiscing about those days and looking forward to our 40th reunion next year, hoping to reconnect with Roger, when I saw the news of his passing. Sorry we wont get that chance. Prayers and blessings, Chuck Brown - Class of 79 Beijing China.

To Juanita, Ryan and Hunter. We are so very sorry to hear of Roger's passing. We truly enjoyed getting to know your family during the boys football days and cherished the friendship we made. I pray that you find peace and comfort during the days ahead. Roger was a good man and I know he will be missed. Thinking of you all and sending you love, hugs and prayers.

Juanita, I am so sorry to see the loss of your husband. I sure can feel for you as it has been 9 years this July since Ray died. I was so shocked to see who your Mother is. I have known her and your Grandmother for years. When I was working and visited you all about the insurance, I did not know Goldie was your Mother. I just talked to Patsy Waddle and she told me how you found him, Its our loss but their gain. May God richly Bless You and give you the Grace you need had this time. Love Sue

I am heartbroken to hear of this loss. I remember Roger from high school English class, where he sat up front right in front of my desk. He kept a running commentary going as I lectured, mostly under his breath, but just loud enough for me to hear, and it was always hilarious - he knew he was cracking me up! But he also knew it was OK. I always have told everybody thaat Roger was the smartest kid I ever taught, and we argued almost daily about going to college - he said he didn't want to, and I said he had to, that it would be a great waste if he didn't go. He probably knew all along that he was going to Tech, but he kept the argument going even the next year when he wasn't in my class, but would come by to see me sometimes. I followed his progress, his success, with interest, and then came to love his wife, and the boys. I was so sorry to learn of his difficulties with his health, but I am so glad to have known him. I will keep his sweet family in my prayers.
