Richard Daniel Alford

Sugar Grove, Va.

Richard Daniel Alford, age 62, passed away Friday, December 7, 2018 at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.

Richard was born in Sparta, N.C. to the late James Buddy and Mamie Bryant Alford. He was a loving husband, father and papaw. "Alford" as many called him, was the ultimate family man. When he wasn't working at General Dynamics, where he spent almost forty years, he could be found spending time with his family, fishing or collecting old cars. Mr. Alford's faith and church were very important in his life. He was a long-time, thirty plus years member of Mount Zion Temple in Marion where he was active in several ministries, especially taking care of and loving on the babies. He just loved people. To relax after work, he would often come home and help a neighbor with one of their projects around the house. He was an honest and hardworking man. Richard and his wife Brenda, of almost thirty-nine years, together raised a wonderful family who will miss him dearly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Bell; and brother, William Alford.

Richard is survived by his wife, Brenda Perkins Alford of Sugar Grove, Va.; daughters, Monica Bowers and husband, Shawn of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Lauren Alford of Marion, Va.; sons, Brenton Alford and Zachary Alford, both of Sugar Grove, Va.; sisters, Joyce Alford of Ennice, N.C., Mary Howard and husband, Roy of Ormond Beach, Fla., Gloria Perrin and husband, Paul, of Washington, D.C., and Margie Kyle and husband, Stanley of Ennice, N.C.; brothers, John Alford and wife, Valerie of Washington, D.C., James Alford and wife, Erika of Winston-Salem, N.C., Bill Alford and wife, Ann of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandchildren, Xavier Bowers and Amelia Bowers; several nieces and nephews and many friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor LaTara Cross officiating. Burial will be held Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at 1p.m. at Slemp Cemetery in Sugar Grove, Va. The family will receive friends Saturday, December 15, 2018 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Seeing this broke my heart. I worked the last 9 years before I retired from General Dynamics in 2009 with Richard, just me and him every day on the job, I knew him like a brother, . He loved his family and we talked every day about his family. He was my best buddy in the whole factory. He was always a gentleman and a honest man and a God loving man who loved every one I loved him like a brother. R I P Brother Richard Ron Brickey 1283 Branch Rd Laurel Bloomery Tn
