In 2007, he was ordained as a Deacon in the Diocese of South Carolina (Anglican). He served as a deacon at St. Paul's Church, Summerville, S.C. Upon returning to Mary's native hometown, Marion, Va. in 2015, Fred served monthly as a Deacon at the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Roanoke, Va., an Anglican Church in the Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic (ACANA). He and his wife also worshipped at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Marion, Va.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Ellett Berkaw; maternal grandparents, Robert Thaddeus and Maude Henderson Ellet; paternal grandparents, Ernest deMun and Lula Bilheimer Berkaw, Sr.

I am so sorry to learn of Freds death. He led the way in making race relations better here in Summerville. His work is still bearing fruit. This is his legacy. Please accept my sincere condolences.

I am very sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you in this difficult time. One encouraging thought you might find comforting is found at John 5:28, 29. The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out. God gives us this beautiful hope that he will soon resurrect our dead loved ones and we can see them again on a paradise earth! I hope this promise brings you comfort as it does me.
