James "Jim" Sturgill

CHILHOWIE, Va.

James “Jim” D. Sturgill, age 72, passed away at his Riverside home on Saturday, February 10, 2018.  He was born in Smyth County, Va. on August 4, 1945.   His parents, Charles “Cat” Sturgill and Pauline Petty Sturgill and one brother, Roger C. Sturgill proceed him in death.

Jim enlisted in the United States Army in 1965.  He served honorably in Vietnam and received Honorable Discharge in 1967.  Later in life he would be awarded a full military disability due to chemical exposure while in Vietnam.

He was a lifelong beef and tobacco farmer on his beloved “South Fork River” in the Riverside community.   He was also an avid hunter & fisherman. Jim will be always remembered as a beloved and generous husband; father; grandfather; uncle; friend and member of the “Camping Crew”.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Linda C. Sturgill (nee Cooper); two sons, Brian D. (Sandi) and Kevin C. (Delena); five grandchildren- Jordan, Reagan, Fletcher, Eden and Brycen; in-laws, Carolyn P. Sturgill, Kenny and Susie Cooper; one nephew,Eric Cooper (Mary Kaye); two nieces- Debbie L. Sturgill and Sarah Stilwell (Dwayne); one dedicated farmhand and friend, Stanley Johnson, several cousins and many devoted friends.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 11, 2018, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Seaver-Brown Funeral Home Chapel.  All are invited to the graveside service held at the Riverside Cemetery on Monday, February 12 at 11 a.m. where Military Honors will be presented by Virginia Highlands Honor Guard.  Family and friends will gather at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. for a short prayer service prior to processing to the cemetery.

The family would also like to thank the staff members of the DaVita Dialysis Unit and the Richardson Ambulance Service for their dedicated service, care, and love.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Riverside Cemetery; Attn: Sue Byrd, 737 Middle Ave, Marion, Va. 24354.
