In 1970 she became an associate with John Tate Realtors. Betty attained her broker’s license in 1975 and continued working for many years at John Tate Realtors, later Century 21 and now Royal Oak Realty. She was also an active member of the Southwest Virginia Association of Realtors, serving as secretary, treasurer, and vice president.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John C. Tate; her parents, Janie Anderson Bane Hyland and William Bane; her grandparents, Cora Wolfe “Annie” and Robert Anderson, Lulu and William Bane; her stepmother, Peg Burke Bane, and stepfather, Chester Hyland.

Betty is survived by two daughters, Carol Tate Edmiston and husband, Charles, and Susan Tate; grandchildren Katie Huber, Ivan Huber and wife, Corey, Erin Huber Atkins, and husband, Lorin; and great grandchildren, Elin Atkins, Arie Atkins, and Cyrus Ramsey; half-brother, Tom Bane and wife, Karen; and half-sister, Judi Bane Segerdell.

My deepest sympathy goes out to you. She went to school with my mom Phoebe Glenn Culbert and was my 4th grade teacher. She was awesome and a very sweet lady.

As Bettys half-brother (we had the same father), I have many good memories of her. One of the earliest of these is Betty and John Tates visits to visit my family in Welch, W. Va in the early 1950s. We played canasta for hours and caught up on the family news. In 1954 my family moved to California, and over the next 67 years, I saw Betty and her family only intermittently. When my wife, Karen, and I visited them in Marion, Betty and John treated us like royalty. We also got to enjoy Bettys legendary garlic grits. Betty and John made trips to California, and we had a great time with them. I particularly remember them taking us for a wonderful Italian Dinner in San Francisco. Betty was a very special person, who was intelligent, generous, and caring. I will miss our phone conversations. Karen and I send our deepest condolences to her family.

Tate family, sorry for the loss of Betty. I knew your Mom and Dad thru the realty company and loved them both. We worked with John on a daily basis in the Treasurer"s office and enjoyed them both so much. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Prayers for the Tate family and friends. Mrs. Tate was my favorite teacher (4th grade)!! She introduced us all to life, loving to live life through learning. And she introduced me to John Steinbeck in reading The Pearl. She was a great blessing in my life, and Ill not forget her.
