Daniel Smith Blevins

Marion, Va.

Daniel Smith Blevins, age 90, passed away Monday, May 4, 2020 at his home. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7

He was born July 6, 1929 in Smyth County, Va., to the late Fred C. and Minnie Brooks Blevins. Dan graduated from Chilhowie High School in 1946. After graduating, he was drafted into the United States Army and held the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict, and once home, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. In 1958, he went to work at Brunswick Corporation as a Mechanical Design Engineer, retiring in 1993 after 35 years. During this time, Dan taught advanced mathematics at Marion College, served as a member of the Smyth County School Board and the Wytheville Community College Board of Directors. Once retired, he was elected to the Smyth County Board of Supervisors from 1996-2000. He was also a member of several other community boards, including Chairman of the Board for the Mount Rogers Development Partnership of VA, the Zoning Board and the Friends of Hungry Mother. Dan was an active member of Marion Baptist Church from 1977 on, teaching Sunday school for over 30 years and serving as a deacon. He was also a longtime member of the Gideons International, faithfully doing his part to spread The Word of our Lord and Savior. Dan's thirst for knowledge never ran dry as he was always studying a variety of subjects; two of his favorites being the Bible and his family genealogy. He thoroughly enjoyed working in his garden every spring for as long as he was able. Dan was a kind-hearted and Godly man, and a loving husband to his wife, Katherine, for 61 years. He loved and adored his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren unconditionally. He always enjoyed conversing with family and friends and liked meeting new people. Dan's memory and legacy will live on through the many lives that he has touched. "When a man dies, a volume of encyclopedia goes with him. Some leave an index, some don't." – Dan Blevins, 2007.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Gilbert S. Blevins and wife, Elizabeth and Raymond S. Blevins; and sister Leola B. Heninger and husband, Charles.

Dan is survived by his wife, Katherine G. Blevins of Marion, Va.; sons, Daniel S. Blevins II of Atlanta, Ga., Robert S. Blevins and wife, Kathy, Barry S. Blevins, all of Marion, Va.; daughter, Taffy K. Boroughs and husband, Jon of Waynesboro, Va.; granddaughters, Sarah E. Jackson and husband, Dewayne of Marion, Va., Morgan A. Robbins and Ava K. Boroughs, of Waynesboro, Va., and Katie D. Moore of Hillsville, Va.; great-grandchildren Aiden, Lorelei and Robert Jackson, of Marion, Va.; sister, Shelva Jean Stroud and husband, C.W., of Winchester, Tenn.; sisters-in-law, Iris G. Cook and husband, Jerry of Vero Beach, Fla., Carolyn G. Groseclose and husband, Mark of Clearwater, Fla., Viola P. Blevins of Roanoke, Va.; brother-in-law David R. Gilley and wife, Kathy of Jacksonville, Fla.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as special family friends, Dr. Ramzi Humsi and wife, Salwa of Marion, Va.

Without fail, Dan could always be depended upon for kind words. We worked together at Brunswick. He was one of those guys that you loved to work with. A true gentleman. I have nothing but great memories of Dan. Please accept my sincere condolences

My sympathy and prayers

My heart and prayers are with Daniels family. Daniel was a great counsel to me in the 1980s. I had accepted Christ but not been baptized. He encouraged me to be baptized and attend church. I was in my 20s and Daniels Godly counsel helped so much. In working on my ancestry last year, I called First Baptist to find Daniel. He called me and we talked for over an hour. Daniel knew my dad and mom and he attended my moms funeral last year. I know Daniel is present with the Lord.

I have so many great memories of Mr. Blevins! I grew up with Taffy as one of my best friends and spent time with the family in their home (for sleepovers) and saw Dan and Katherine at Marion Baptist Church every week. Whenever I saw Dan, he was always smiling! He always seemed so happy! I truly believe it was because he loved people and loved to talk to everyone! If I saw him at church, he would take the time to really have a conversation with me.... and listen to what I had to say. How many adults really listen to teenagers? Dan did! He loved his family, too and it was apparent. He also loved the Lord and he loved to talk about God and how much God loved everyone! His love for the Lord was very evident! He was such a kind, loving man and will be missed in the community! My deepest sympathy for the family! Prayers for comfort for you all during this difficult time.
