Charles B. Dickson

MARION, Va. Charles B. Dickson, age 79, died Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va. Mr. Dickson was born in Marion, N.C. in February of 1937. He graduated high school in 1955, then attended college at Davidson, was initiated into Pi Kappa Phi and graduated in 1959. He and Harriett married and moved to Marion, Va. and Charlie went to work in insurance. He ended up retiring from the Department of Environmental Quality after 25 years of employment. Mr. Dickson was proud of his country and proved that with his service in the U.S. Navy, leaving them as a Lieutenant in 1972. He had many loves in his life – Harriett, his wife of 51 years and Caroline and Elizabeth, his daughters who took care of him after their mother passed. Charlie also loved the Clemson Tigers, Tar Heels and Phil Mickelson. Football, basketball and golf were sports he loved to watch, along with going to the Barter Theater and then to Cracker Barrel with the girls. Mr. Dickson was a supporter of his community and was an active member of the Marion Kiwanis Club and enjoyed his time with friends. His quiet way, gentle smile and friendly spirit will be missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriett Fleming Dickson; and parents, Bryan Dickson, DDS and Gimmie Florence Dickson. Charles is survived by two daughters, Caroline Miller Dickson of Marion, Va. and Elizabeth Florence Dickson of Marion, N.C.; two granddaughters, Cassie Kaye Dickson of Christiansburg, Va. and Christina Kaye Angstadt of Rural Retreat, Va.; granddog, Baxter Dickson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Reverend Steve Cathcart and Reverend Alan Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the U.S. Navy and Francis Marion VFW Post #4667. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marion Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 501, Marion, Va. 24354. Caroline and Elizabeth, We just got back from Asheville about an hour ago. We were shocked to see the obituary in the paper. Charles and Harriet were wonderful neighbors in Saltville. I, Cheri, have such fond memories of babysitting you as little girls. Hope to see you both some day soon.

I was so sorry to read Charlie's obituary today. I worked in the same office in Marion as Charlie. He was a great friend and he and Harriet used to ride me hard because I am a UNC grad and they were such big fans of the Clemson Tigers. I lost several bets to Charlie when the Tigers and Tarheels would play. Your fad was a great man and I will miss him a lot. I hope God gives the family the piece of mind that Charlie and Harriet are loving each other in heaven together.
