Anna "Butchie" Barger Crabtree

"I am whole again and with the Lord."

Anna "Butchie" Barger Crabtree, age 80, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie, Va.

Having fought many health obstacles during her years, she died with dignity and grace, always strong willed and with conviction to never give up. She vowed to fight till she could not fight any longer. Anna touched so many people through out her life with love, devotion, courage, faith and strength; God took an angel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lois Waddle Barger; husband, Roddy Crabtree; son, Robert Michael Crabtree; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Charleene Simmerman Barger; father and mother-in-law, Paul and Nancy Crabtree; and sister-in-law, Jane Crabtree Riddle.

Anna is survived by her precious niece and nephew, Brenda Barger Faulkner and husband, C.L., Laymond Barger and wife, Debbie; special great-nephews, Cole Faulkner and Hunter Barger and wife, Stephanie; great-niece, Jordan Faulkner; great-great-nephew, Grayson Barger; many cousins and friends.

She and her family give a heartfelt thanks to her precious caregivers, Sheila Elledge, Beverly Evans, and Pam Jackson. So many people loved her and took such good care of her during this difficult time.

Anna was reared in the Ceres community of Bland County and graduated from Ceres High School. She attended Radford College and received her B.S. degree in Home Economics in 1959. Graduate studies were pursued at the University of Virginia. Anna began her professional career as a Home Economics Instructor at Marion College, a position she held for eight years. She became a Home and Family Living Instructor with the Blue Ridge Job Corps in Marion, and later became a Home Economist with Appalachian Power Company. In 1976 she became an Extension Agent in Home Economics in Smyth County and was later appointed Unit Director. After 10 years as an Extension Employee, Anna retired on April 30, 1986.

She was known for her warm hospitality and mastery of the kitchen. She had a deep appreciation for even the smallest blessings. Anna enjoyed camping, gourmet cooking, reading and traveling. She was active in numerous professional and civic organizations. A few of those were Wytheville Community College Board of Directors, Smyth County Social Services Board, Smyth County Chamber of Commerce, DAR, and Virginia Farm Bureau. Anna was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, which became such an important part of her life.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 1, 2019 at 8 p.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Marion Va. with the Reverend Jonathan Hammon and the Reverend James Bangle officiating. Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Sharon Lutheran Church Cemetery, Ceres, Va. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 p.m. until the time of service at Ebenezer Lutheran Church.

Anna was an inspiration to all who knew her. It was her joy for life and her smile that encouraged us. Anna will be greatly missed by her Roanoke College friends and the entire Marion College Alumni Association. She truly lived the Marion Ideal. The Marion Ideal To care for what is, rather than for what seems To be loyal to the traditions of the past, yet open to the discoveries of the present and the hopes of the future To find freedom in knowledge of the truth, beauty in the common sphere of daily living, joy in love and friendship, strength in constructive service To play happily and work honestly To believe in God and Gods children To serve where service is the most needed This is the ideal of Marion College. THE MARION IDEAL

Ah, what a lost to all of us, her family, friends, church, and those of us who knew her from Marion College days and the reunions afterwards....... she was a good friend, a warm friend/person to all of us who knew her. I have enjoyed, since moving back to Marion for my retirement yrs, my reconnection with Anna at our church, and Marion College Reunions and the many visits in her home. A gracious and very Southern lady has left our midst and she will be truly missed, but we will meet again some day.....rest my dear friend for you now have your reward for the LIFE that you gave to all of us!!

Anna will surely be missed. She was a true treasure in our church. We always looked forward to her smile and hugs on Sunday mornings. She was the kindest, dearest and strongest woman We Have ever known and we should all strive to be more like her. We loved her and will miss her deeply, but it is reassuring to know she is now pain free and with those she loved the most. Joe & Deb
